A maskil (מַשְׂכִּיל‎) is a Hebrew literary musical term occurring in the heading of some psalms.
It's also a title of honor, meaning "scholar" or "enlightened one," used by Isaac Israeli ben Joseph in the 14th century to refer to his Italian Jewish colleagues.
Maschil was the chief musician leading the Hebrew "choir" during the reign of King David of Israel. David apparently also wrote some of the psalms, as well as Maschil, and these psalms were set to music and presented before the assemblies of the people.
Psalms 32 was a Psalm of David, Maschil. It is unsure of when it was written, but it reads "Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered."
