Most species of kangaroos are crepuscular, feeding in the early morning and at dusk. As feeders they are primarily grazing animals. Larger kangaroos are semi-nomadic. They do not remain in one place, but move about in their mobs in search of food. This behavioural adaptation ensures that, in a country where rainfall is limited and drought can decimate food sources, the kangaroos have left the area long before starvation becomes a problem.
Many species live in large groups known as mobs or herds, with an alpha male. Young males must compete for domination, and the right to mate with any of the females in the mob. Domination disputes include aggressive behaviour involving kicking with the hind legs and boxing with the front feet. Some species, however, tend to be solitary, such as the euro, northern Nailtail wallaby and the red-necked pademelon.
Some of the larger species of kangaroos, such as the Red kangaroo, are quite bold, while rock wallabies of most species are quite timid.
