Best Answer

They are equivalent degrees and are both physicians. The Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) is a physician that completes four years of medical school. Like the Doctor of Medicine, the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) also completes four years of medical school and is a physician, but places additional emphasis on the musculoskeletal system. Osteopathic physicians (DOs) also believe strongly in the healing power of the body and do their best to facilitate that strength.

Holders of a DO are known as osteopathic physicians, while holders of an MD are sometimes referred to as allopathic physicians D.O.s are trained much in the same way as M.D.s, with the addition of osteopathic manipulative medicine techniques. Osteopaths also believe strongly in the healing power of the body and do their best to facilitate that strength. During this century, the disciplines of osteopathy and allopathic medicine have been converging.
