Persian rugs were generally made with wool pile on cotton foundations but they also used: silk, cotton and sometimes they used a mix of two or three of the materials I had mentioned.

How do you identify a Persian rug versus a Oriental Rug?

All Persian rugs are Oriental rugs, but not all Oriental rugs are Persian. In order for an Oriental rug to be Persian, it must have been made in the country of Iran. Iranian rugs can come in all different types of styles, colors, weaves, etc. and it can take years of experience to be able to tell the difference, so it is really best to just inquire after the rug's country of origin when trying to figure out if an Oriental rug is Persian or not.

How do you identify a Persian or oriental rug?

Identifying a Persian or Oriental rug involves examining several key factors such as origin, craftsmanship, materials, and design patterns. First, Persian rugs are specifically made in Iran and are often named after the region or city they come from, such as Kashan, Tabriz, or Isfahan. Oriental rugs, on the other hand, is a broader term that includes rugs made across Asia, including India, Turkey, China, and Iran. One of the most important indicators is the knotting technique. Handmade rugs, especially hand-knotted ones, will have visible knots on the back, and the design will appear slightly imperfect — which is actually a sign of authenticity. Materials also play a big role. Authentic Persian and Oriental rugs are typically made from high-quality wool or silk, giving them durability and a rich texture. Design patterns can also help identify the origin. Persian rugs often feature intricate floral motifs and medallion designs, while other Oriental rugs may include geometric or tribal patterns. Jaipur, India is also well-known globally for producing high-quality Oriental-style handmade rugs with excellent craftsmanship. Manufacturers like Jaipur Carpet Studio create premium handmade rugs using traditional techniques and export them to markets like the USA, UK, and Europe. Overall, checking the origin, knotting, material, and design can help you accurately identify a Persian or Oriental rug.
