A SATA hard drive is a hard drive that connects to the computer through the SATA bus. SATA is an interface released in 2004 to replace older IDE / PATA interfaces.

Also called a Serial ATA, the SATA hard drive helps in the process of transferring data from an external hard drive to the bus in the computer. The bus is a component that transfers information from one part of the computer system to another.

SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment, Serial ATA) was introduced in 2003

and is the most common technology for hard drive connectivity.

Starting with revision 1.0, which transfers data at speeds up to 1.5 Gbps, SATA is now at revision 3 which transfers data at speeds up to 6Gbps.

To understand the speeds here is an example;

An mp3 song might be 6MB in size.

6Gbps = roughly 600MB per second.

SATA 3 can in, effect, transfer 100 of those MP3 songs every second.

IDE and SATA are essentially two different types of connectors that allow the hard drive to communicate with the computer. If you have a tower with plenty of room, you might be able to get a SATA adaptor for around $15. However, an easier solution is to use an external drive. USB drives are relatively inexpensive and would allow you to retain your current drive, giving you more space. Most systems will even allow you to install the operating system on the external drive, if you wish to do so.

Can you replace eide hard drive with a sata hard drive?

No. IDE Hard Drive cannot be replaced with a Sata Hard Drive because the connectors are different. example. if you have sata hard drive installed on your machine. and you purchase IDE Hard drive. you won't be able to install the IDE hard drive where the Sata hard drive was because the IDE connectors are a different shape and size towards the Sata hard drive connectors.

Just replaced a defective secondary 160gb sata hard drive with a 200gb sata hard drive the new hard drive is not functioning I used the new cables that came with the one what is the problem?

You should check the exact type of your SATA drives, and what cables they require, on their website: SATA drives come as SATA-1 and SATA-2, and also as E-SATA [external SATA], I believe. The cables may be different, check it out on Wiki or your mfrs site. cheers!

What is a satae?

A sata cable connects a motherboard to a Sata hard drive. Modern power supplies have special chords made to power Sata hard drives where as old ones do not. Older computers have Eide cables to connect the motherboard to the hard drive.
