What is the origin of the phrase a load of old Tosh is it related to the job of a tosher?

A Tosher is the name given to someone who scavenges in sewers, especially in Victorian Britain. This wonderful activity began around the time of the construction of the sewers in London by Joseph Bazelgette. As you can imagine these people were not very acceptable to society, and especially their neighbours. Apparently it was very common to see a complete family remove a manhole cover, and disappear into the sewers, where they could find quite rich pickings. One lucky side-effect of this wonderful job, was that toshers, or those toshers who survived, built up a very strong resistance to typhus and other diseases of the ghettos. The phrase 'a load of old tosh' did in fact enter the English language though 'toshing' the job of a tosher. The word tosher was also used to describe the thieves who stripped copper from the hulls of ships moored in the Thames. One interesting little footnote, Peter Bazelgette, great great grandson of Joseph Bazelgette, is a producer of Big Brother, so it could be said that the family is still dealing with manure.
