Common to all these belief systems were gods who were limited in their power. Also common was the belief that these gods could be harmed by other gods, could be tricked into benefiting mortals, were immortal, and had the morals of minks. The Greeks, Persians, Romans, Norse, Egyptians, and Angles all had complex pantheons of gods and goddesses. Each god had limited scope to his power and was not omnipotent. Creation of another god or goddess was often bizarre and outside the norm for human reproduction. Since they were above men, it was thought that placating these gods would bring favor on mortals. The worship of these deities was thought to bring good fortune to the mortal world and favor in an afterlife. There were systems of afterlife also, with gods for these realms too. In essence, placating these gods would result in the gods ignoring mankind..which was a desireable thing. As these civilizations declined, so did the worship of these deities. The worship became folk tales, then myths.
