A Wheatstone bridge can be used to measure resistances on all kinds of electronic equipment, or pinpointing short circuits, but they can be especially useful in measuring very low resistances such as shorted primary windings in Transformers or coils. or measuring any resistance to small to be accurately be measured by a conventional ohm meter.

A network of resistors which can be used to (for example) measure resistance. Electric current is divided into two resistor arms, A and B and rejoined at the other end to continue the flow. A connection point X is made along the arm A, and another point Y on arm B. A voltmeter is connected between X and Y. This kind of circuit is called a Bridge (invented by Prof Wheatstone of London, England). When the meter indicates zero current between X and Y it implies that the potential (voltage) at X is the same as at Y, which means the ratio of the resistances AX to XB is the same as the ratio of resistances AY to YB, independent of the voltage supply. This circuit can be used to measure currents and voltages also.
