The Douglas C-47 Skytrain or Dakota is the military variant of the DC-3 airliner flown in large numbers during WW2, over 10,000 were built during and for a few years after the war for airline service.
It is said that there were so many flying in WWII & that they hauled so much freight that they were doing the job of a railroad, thus the name nick name SKYTRAIN
The C-47 "Skytrain" earned many affectionate nicknames "Gooney Bird" and "Old Bucket" during its working days. The Brits designated it the "Dakota", a clever acronym composed of the letters DACoTA for Douglas Aircraft Company Transport Aircraft
The Ice Pilots (TV show) still fly this aircraft as do many third world air forces, for freight movement. There are still few airplanes that do a better job of carrying a load to remote & hostile places and still coming home on time than the "Gooney bird"
