I grew up in Lakewood, California where the Helms Bakery in Culver City used to have yellow paneled bakery trucks go to various Los Angeles neighborhoods daily & toot a whistle twice as they came on your block. They had donuts, pastries, turnovers & pies, bread and even candy. The Helm's man would slide out the long built-in wooden drawers behind the rear of the truck to show you the fresh baked goodies to choose. I still remember how beautiful the woodworking was on those drawers and the fantastic smells of the still warm donuts and cookies. The Helms Bakery were one of the major sponsors of the 1932 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Their logo was the five Olympic Rings and a torch, on a U.S. flag shield background. If you see an etching looking like this on an old building in the Los Angeles or San Diego areas, that building is probably a former Helms Thrift Shop or bakery. Some Helms' bread went on an Apollo space flight for a big advertising promotion in 1969 but, by the time the astronauts came back to earth, the company went out of business.
