Baleen whales eat krill, zooplankton and small fish swarming in large schools. Because baleen whales have no teeth, they are believed to uses their enormous tongue to move food trapped inside the baleen, to squeeze water out of the mouth, and to assist the action of swallowing.

Balleen is used to sift food out of the water. Large whales tend to eat krill witch is kindof like sea monkeys, small shrimp, and they use the Balleen to sift them out of the water. The whales have no teeth because they were changed into the hairlike Balleen long ago. More at Marine Biology web sites. to sift out useable food form the whales great intakes of water Most whales eat krill which are small crustacians. Whales basically fill their mouths with huge amounts of water rich with krill and use baleen, which acts like a filter, to filter the krill by pushing out the water through the baleen. They then wipe the krill off the inside of the baleen with their tongues and swallow it.
