In the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th centuries they simply didn't exist, so nobody wore them.The bascinet helmet developed early in the 14th century and was worn by most knights at that time. It was generally pointed at the top and had a deep neck and sides to protect the head, leaving only the face uncovered. This style was often worn in battle underneath a "great helm", shaped like a bucket or barrel with eye slits and completely covering the head.Edward the Black Prince wore exactly this combination of bascinet and great helm in the 1370s.By the 1350s, however, many knights began to fit visors to the bascinet and leave off the great helm, which was a nightmare as far as visibilty and ease of breathing were concerned.
