A birdwoman is a woman who works with birds, or an informal term for a female aviator.
Aviatrix. it comes from the Latin and is approximately- Birdwoman. pronounced correctly to rhyme with Have- I- a- Trix, not Ave a Trix!
Marlene Cameron has: Played Birdwoman in "Superboy" in 1988. Played Mrs. Johnson in "Deadly Innocents" in 1989. Played Eva Temple in "Orpheus Descending" in 1990. Played Hattie in "Running Cool" in 1993. Played Mrs. Carter in "Shoot" in 1993.
Lit Birdwoman- female of Aviator. the term was first applied to Woman aircraft pilots in l9l2 with the advent of Harriet Quimby. term immediately caught on. It is not normally applied to female balloonists or lighter-than-air operatives- which there have been a few. Aida Acosta piloted what we would now call a Blimp in Paris in June of l903, almost six months before Wright Bros flight! She is not called an Aviatrix, unlilke Amelia, Harriet Quimby, etc. Custom tends to restrict the term to female Airplane pilots.
aviatrixIf one is referring to Pilot in the aircraft sense of the term ( of course there were and are Harbor Pilots- long before that- the German derived term Steerman is apt. 0-but fo the aircraft pilots- Aviatrix is the standard term, the female of Aviator. it literally means Birdwoman- Avis- Birds ( not the auto rental agency!) plus the female suffix Trix. Amelia Earhart was the premiere Aviatrix, so to speak. New film coming out about her October 23, it caught on in a flash- pun intended, the mysterious Electra Project. By the way ( Trix) is sometimes used to mean a fast or loose woman- a take-off ( pun intended) on Aviatrix. the rarely used term Viatrix- implies something like a ( woman who gets around) or a Runaround Sue type- again a tie in.

Bird Women=========================Although Sacagawea was born a Shoshone, Lewis and Clark wrote that she had been captured by Minnetaris (Hidatsas) when she was about 11 years old; they found her at age 16 married to the French-Canadian interpreter Toussaint Charbonneau at the Hidatsa village. She had been given the name Tsakakawia (Bird-woman) by the Hidatsas, which Lewis and Clark had great trouble in spelling, not least because Clark was very poorly educated and was unable to spell even English words. They settled for Sacagawea, which later got distorted again to Sacajawea (another spelling error). So Sacagawea is not a Shoshone name, but the name given to her by the Hidatsas. Her original Shoshone name is not recorded; she would certainly not have been permitted to keep it by her Hidatsa captors, who treated her as a slave.
