A birthwort is any of several plant species of the genus Aristolochia.
To get rid of birthwort, you should first wear gloves and protective clothing, as it can be harmful. Manually remove the plant by digging out the roots, ensuring you get as much of the root system as possible to prevent regrowth. Additionally, you can apply a non-selective herbicide, following the manufacturer's instructions, to effectively kill any remaining plants. Regular monitoring and removal of new growth are essential to prevent reinfestation.

Wild ginger is a weed that smells like ginger (Zingiber officinale). The herbaceous plant in question (Asarum spp) may be found growing natively throughout the temperate northern hemisphere. But unlike ginger root, the kidney-leaved, little jug-flowered member of the birthwort family Aristolochiaceae must not be eaten as wild ginger contains the cancer-causing aristolochic acid.

Medicine in ancient Rome was predictably derived from their knowledge of prevailing Greek practice, and mostly herbal. The remedies derived from fennel, rhubarb, gentian, birthwort, licorice and aloe were used for remedying everything from gastrointestinal conditions to childbirth and skin and joint conditions.
Roman medicine was largely based on Greek medicine. The first doctors were Greek war captives and Greek doctors also moved to Rome, where they could make a better living. The Romans, unlike the Greeks, were also concerned about public health and built sewers and bathhouses for hygiene and brought fresh water to the town by building aqueducts. They used herbs and other natural products as such as fennels, rhubarb, gentian, aloe, liquorice and birthwort as medicines. Doctors carried out physical examinations and their diagnosis was based on a mix Greek and local practices. Their ideas about medicines were influenced by the spiritual belief of the Greeks. Surgery was quite sophisticated for the time and doctors used scalpels, bone drills and forceps, crushing forceps, surgical saws, spatulas, vaginal speculas, obstetrical hooks and catheters. Tools were boiled in water before use. Vinegar was used to clean wounds. Opium and scopolamine (from solanaceae plants) were used as painkillers. There was not a lot of medical progress through much of the Roman days. Individual doctors followed their own theories. With the advent of Christianity things improved. Hospitals and housing for doctors and nurses were built. Some had libraries and training and medical texts became more standardised. The greatest improvements occurred during the Byzantine period
