A fiction book is a work of more than 50,000 words which is not based on reality. Books that are based on factual information are called nonfiction books. Fiction books are stories - either the whole thing is made up, or it's based on something real and contains made-up information, or it's a "what if" or "it might have happened this way" scenario.
In the book it is quite clear that they don't, Jem more so than Scout. In the movie it is never really brought up, but it is made clear to the audience that Dill makes his stories up.
Well, I'll recommend a book, but I'm pretty sure it's for teens and up, but anyway, if you like scary stories, there's a book called Limboland, by J.E. Deegan. It's a collection of small, scary stories.
