According to one Christian tradition, Mary the mother of Jesus was born to an elderly couple, Anna and Joachim in Nazareth. When she was three years old, they took her to the Temple at Jerusalem and had her consecrated as a virgin under the authority of Zachariah (the future father of John the Baptist). She lived out her early childhood with other young girls. It was at Jerusalem that she met Joseph, who was already an acquaintance of her parents. When the time came for the young girls to return home (they could no longer remain in the Temple once they began to menstruate due to purity laws), Mary could not do so. Unfortunately, by this time, Anna and Joachim had died, leaving behind property in Nazareth.

Meanwhile, in Jerusalem, Zachariah perplex over what exactly to do with Mary, summoned all the eligible, unmarried men to Jerusalem. Upon arrival, Zachariah gave them each a twig, believing that which ever of the twigs sprouted, the man to whom it belonged would take Mary home with him. Joseph as was said earlier was already in Jerusalem, he too was given a twig and gathered up the other twigs and placed them in the Temple. Afterward it was found that Joseph's twig was the only one to bloom and so he agreed to take Mary home.

Because Mary had inherited property in Nazareth, that is where the two had decided to go. At this point the Lukan narrative takes off.

the holy mother was immaculately conceived and born to st. Ann and st. Joachim. at the age of fourteen she was engaged to a young man, named Joesph, who was of the house of David. she was visited by the angle Gabriel. and conceived Jesus through the power of the holy spirit. she gave birth to jesus in Bethlehem, but still remained a virgin, and did not have any more children. she raised Jesus, and was with him at the foot of the cross. there she was given the responsibility of being the spiritual mother of the church. she was assumed into heaven. she is greatly honored throughout the entire catholic church, and is a great role model for all people especially women.

Roman Catholic AnswerThere are three defined dogmas concerning the Blessed Virgin Mary:

1) At the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D., in response to the Nestorian heresy, the Council defined Mary as Theotokos, "the Mother of God".

2) In 1854, in his bull Ineffabilis Deus, Pope Pius IX infallibly defined the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception.

3) In 1950, Pope Pius XII, in his Apostolic Constitution, Munificentissimus Deus, proclaimed the dogma of the Assumption of Mary.
