Is additional insured the same as insured as used in a business income coverage policy?

An Additional Insured is only used for General Liability coverage. Since Business income is a property coverage, they would not be insured. Also, business income is designed to pay for loss of income to the insured, not lienholders, or contractors they are performing jobs for.

Are disability insurance premiums a business expense?

They can be if set up properly. For instance, if you are a business owner you would take out a DI plan as a Business Overhead Expense policy. The benefits are used to pay the lease or mortgage, utilities, salaries, insurance, etc. You benefit directly as your business stays afloat and profitable and you continue to get the income. You write off the premiums as a business expense so therefor it works out free or nearly free. Add the extra bonus of a Return of Premium rider and you get all your money back at the end of the policy thereby giving your self a huge retirement bonus that in essence cost you nothing!

Who pays disability income?

Disability income can be paid by a private insurance company that is licensed and authorized to issue disability income policies in the state of policy issuance. The policy can provide short-term or long-term benefits, depending upon its terms. It is designed to replace income lost due to a disabling sickness or accident specified in the policy. Often, short-term disability insurance is furnished as a benefit of employment by employers for eligible employees. In those cases, the employer may either have purchased a group short-term disability policy, or self-insure for the payment of short-term disability benefits. In general, if one purchases private disability coverage and him/herself pays the premiums for it, the benefits that are paid are not taxable.

If you receive Disability Income from a Long Term Disability Insurance Policy can creditors garnish the monthly income from this policy?

The answer to your question is yes. If creditors can garnish your wages if you were working, then they can garnish the income you receive from your disability provider as well. The same procedures they would have to go through to garnish your wages from your employer, they would go through the disability company (filing court documents). Unfortunately, creditors consider any income you receive, working or not, as income.

Can a dentist on permanent disibility own practices and make income from them?

This will have a LOT to do with the definition of total disability your policy provides you. If you purchased a True Own Occupation Disability policy, then Yes you can work as a practice owner and still receive 100% of your Disability benefits. The primary requirement is that you continue to be unable to perform the material and substantial duties of a Dentist. If the policy you purchased has a Modified Own Occupation definition of disability that working as a practice owner and earning an income will have a negative effect on the benefits you receive from your Long Term Disability insurance.

Is disablilty taxable with a Waiver Of Premium Rider for private disability insurance?

Most Individual Disability policies have waiver of premium once you qualify for disability benefits built into the policies. If the premiums for the policy were not deducted as a business expense then the income from the disability policy should be received tax free. If you have a group disability plan paid for by your employer then the benefits are usually taxable. In most cases you cannot purchase more than 70% of your income, in total, either in a group policy or in an individual policy or in a combination of both. The insurance companies have a schedule as to how much coverage you can buy based on your total earned income. The percentage goes down dramatically as your income increase. At $100,000 of income the total disability coverage you can purchase from all sources is around 55% of your income and for most people the maximum benefit available is around $15,000 a month and they would have to be earning over $400,000 a year to qualify for that amount of coverage. Unearned income, such as investment income, can also reduce the amount of coverage you can qualify for. I have heard it said that 1/2 the divorces in the USA are caused due to one of the spouses becoming disabled. When one loses their ability to provide for themselves through no fault of their own their personalities change and if they didn't have a quality disability program in place to help compensate they also can have major financial issues to deal with as well. That is not conducive to a happy lifestyle.
