Who named them guinea pigs?
The name is derived from 'Cabiai' in the language of the Galibi
tribe of French Guiana. The origin of 'Guinea' is hard to explain
other than they may have been brought to Europe by way of Guinea.
The Guinea Pig does not originate from Guinea but from the Andes
where they were domesticated as early as 5000 BC. It may be that
the introduction to Europe was by way of the Spanish up to 1532 as
well as Dutch and English traders
