There are three broad classifications for times when animals are most active. Diurnal animals are those who are most active during the daylight hours. Nocturnal animals are those who are most active in the dark of night-time. Crepuscular animals are those who are most active during periods of twilight, both dawn and dusk, and under bright moonlight. Cats fall into this last category, which is why cat owners often experience the "The Evening Crazies" from their pets.

Also, for many cats, their favorite time of day is whenever the Sun happens to be at the right height to send a sunbeam to their preferred lounging-spot. :)
