What is a catafalque?

The word "catafalque" can have two meanings:

- it may be casket bier or a - often rather huge and usually raised - movable platform upon which a casket or the body of a deceased person is be placed when lying in state

- it may be a proxy of the original casketed remains:

for that purpose, a casket or coffin shaped structure is covered with a pall (cloth) in order to represent the absent original casket and body; for example, after the death of a pope in the Vatican, the catholic cathedral in New York may hold a requiem mass using a catafalque which represents the casketed remains of the deceased pope in Rome.
