In "Where the Red Fern Grows," the character vs nature conflict occurs when the protagonist, Billy, faces challenges from the wilderness while hunting with his two dogs. This conflict is evident in the way Billy must navigate the rugged terrain, battle against the harsh elements, and outwit wild animals in order to achieve his goal of becoming a successful hunter.
The conflict in the beginning of the story is Billy so desperately wanting some hunting dogs. Later on, the conflict becomes him trying to save his dogs when it appears everything is trying to take them away from him (ex. Little Ann drowning in river, Old Dan getting stuck in the muskrat hole...).
Those conflicts get solved by when Billy earns enough money to buy his hounds. When Little Ann is drowning he goes in with a long pole and takes her out of the river. When Old Dan get stuck in the muskrat hole he digs him out.
