A child who is hurtful in words and/or actions is called a bully. They may shove other children and call them dumb. All children are hurtful to others at one time or another, but it is the repeated and escalating harassment that makes a bully. The child who is a bully may feel inferior on the inside or not know how to handle feelings appropriately. No one knows with certainty what makes a child or even an adult a bully. Most scientists agree that it is partly hereditary and partly environmental.

One thing you can do is take the letter to the police. It may seem drastic, but it will make a point to both the bully and to your child. Your child will be reassured that the law is on his side and that protection is available. The bully will, hopefully, be contacted and instructed not to do it again and warned that if he follows through on his threats he will be punished. He may actually be punished for the threatening letter itself!

Making a child or a person bully-proof means that they are unable to be bullied. They have learned how to deal with bullies, either by ignoring them, or facing up and exposing them, or by seeking assistance.
