The free flow of information and opinion is essential for a democratic society. People can make up their own minds about what they think is important or what they choose to believe, but they have to make the effort to hear different sides and there have to be those whose job it is to provide that information. Without a free media the only story told is the story of those in charge and you become North Korea.
They are as free as any one in any of the developed democratic society's can be. They are free to express their opinion publicly. they are free to have any religion or none they are free to leave the country if they feel they wish to . they enjoy most forms of freedom of artistic and literary expression in most things.
A free press gives objective information and investigates reports of illegal activity in political parties and elected officials. Without a free press Nixon may have gotten away with Watergate . It is the watch dog of a democratic society .

One of the basic or central aspects of a democratic society is the assumption that citizens, by and large, are the better judges of their own interests whenever they have free access to information that concerns themselves. This takes into consideration of using common sense with personal decisions and the common sense of not injuring others. With this access, information and common sense, citizens elect reasonable people to public office and hold them accountable for their actions while in public office.
