# What is a coefficient?

###### Wiki User

###### April 17, 2012 5:11AM

A coefficient is a number in front of a variable (i.e.

multiplied by it).

For example, in the expression *x*2 - 10x + 25, the

coefficient of x2 is 1 and the coefficient of *x* is -10. The

third term, 25, is a constant.

If the expression were -*x*2 + 10x + 25, the coefficient of

*x*2 would be -1, and the coefficient of *x* would be

10.
