What does the low pressure air mass do?

The Low Pressure Air Mass is the active feature of Our Atmosphere, air rises at it's center. The High Pressure Air Mass exists where-ever the Low does not: Air rising at the center of Lows descends at the centers of High Pressure Systems. The Low Pressure Air Mass acts as a Heat Pump that takes Heat North and Cold South.

What is high air mass?

fair weather

What is an inversion layer?

In meteorology, an inversion layer is an atmosphere layer where the vertical temperature gradient increases with the altitude, that's to say a cold air mass under a warmer air mass. It is a deviation of the normal vertical temperature gradient of the lower atmosphere. An inversion layer usually occurs with a high pressure system in winter, when this one carries a cold air mass near the ground. A high pressure system is an area with relative higher atsmopheric pressure than surrounding regions. It's characterized by a sinking, descending air which warms up and dries as it sinks towards the ground. That's why a high pressure system is associated with a dry warm air mass in a high altitude but under the system, there may be a cold, a cool, a mild, a warm or a hot air mass. In case of there's a cold air mass, the system will produce an inversion layer, in that case called a subsidence inversion. An inversion layer is a sign that the atmosphere is very stable, and it prevent vertical lift movements such as convection. Heavy clouds can't form in an inversion layer because of the stability of the air except if the high pressure system weakens and a low pressure system comes. If the air near the ground is moist and cold enough, an inversion layer can lead to formation of fog, haze, low clouds or smog, which reduces air quality. That's why a high pressure system doesn't always bring sunny weather.

Pressure differences between warm and cold air masses cause what?

Pressure differences between warm and cold air masses cause fronts or high/low pressure systems. A warm front is when a warm, moist air mass slides up and over a cold air mass, and a cold front is the opposite.

Why cant a cold air mass combine with a warm air mass?

Because the warm air mass (high pressure) rotates to the right (clockwise), and the cold air mass (low pressure) rotates to the left (counter clockwise). With them both going in two different directions they can't combine, therefore they collide resulting in a storm.

What is a high pressure system and a cold front?

First, the high pressure is a area of increased air pressure, you'll get great weather from a high pressure system. It would be represented with a blue "H" on a weather map. Second, a cold front is defined as a leading edge of a cold mass of air, they are normally stronger in autumn and spring. It is represented with a blue line with triangles pointed the direction the front is traveling. Related links will provide more information.
