Many people need help with this as ties are not worn as often as they used to be. The best way to learn is to watch somebody else and follow what they do, and therefore the videos on YouTube demonstrating tie tying are an excellent source of information. There are demonstrations of "normal" ties and also the more complicated tying of a bow tie.
Up through the 1960s, boys and men wore both kinds of ties. After the 1970s, clip ties declined--they looked unprofessional, childish. However, many adult men, even in public office, wore clip ties almost exclusively. By the 1990s-2000s and since, "fashion" has changed quite a bit. Bow ties still don't occupy the prestige of a properly tied necktie, but bow clips are now more accepted (even as eccentric). Practice tying the knot of a regular necktie. It does take practice. But also, experiment with clip ties---a store would let you "try one on". See which type you prefer. Consider what look you desire. Choose based on your own likes and preferences.

That depends on where you are going. Certain formal occasions call for a thicker, or more traditional necktie. The knot on your necktie also determines the thick/skinny look, as some knots are much wider and more symmetrical than others. You can alter the look of a tie just by tying it with a thin/thick knot. How you tie a necktie to look skinny/thick depends on what kind of knot you would like to end up with. Try a Full Windsor on a skinny tie for a formal look that isn't as overpowering as a Full Windsor on a thick tie. Generally, skinny ties are back in, but maybe not those super-skinny ones we've seen on Miami Vice.
