It means that members of each species compete regularly to obtain food, living space, and other necessities of life.(Found this information in my Biology Textbook pg.380)This phrase means that life is hard. Life is not going well. You are struggling to survive.Ex: no money, no house, or no food
The primary danger is increased interspecific competition (for food, water, living space, other niche components) that may result in the elimination of the current population.

Some examples of cooperation between species are: animals alerting each other of predators, animals eating insects off of others. Some examples of competition are: fighting for living space and resources, fighting for a mate.
An extinct animal is an animal that has no living member on Earth i.e. all of that species have died.
when there are no living members of a species the species is said to be "extinct".

Your question is: How does competition affect organisms? Well here is the answer. Competition is a way of winning or competing in challenging situations. For organisms, if the compete the organism could get injured by depending on the way the compete. They could fight, which is a common thing for living things.
Interspecific : Interspecific competition, in ecology, is a form of competition in which individuals of different species vie for the same resource in an ecosystem (e.g. food or living space). The other form of competition is intraspecific competition, which involves organisms of the same species.Intraspecific : Intraspecific competition is a particular form of competition in which members of the same species vie for the same resource in an ecosystem (e.g. food, light, nutrients, space). This can be contrasted with Interspecific competition, in which different species compete.Source(s):Google Definitions
Food would be the main area of competition between desert rabbits and mice. Depending on their shared environment, living space (places providing shelter from predators and for sleeping and breeding) might be another area of competition. For example: if food is plentiful, but safe and available living areas are not, they will compete for the latter, while if food is scarce but living space is plentiful, they'll compete for food. If both necessities are scarce, of course, they'll compete for both. If any or all necessities remain scarce, eventually one species will dominate and the other will migrate from, or die out of, that area.
If there are no living animals or plants alive in a particular species, it is listed as extinct.
