"Conventional" just means 'the most usually used".

When referring to materials this means that the things which are "conventional" will vary according to what the task of the material is.

Slate is a conventional material for roofing houses, but not for clothing

Wool is a conventional material for clothing, but not for making bicycles

Steel is a conventional material for making bicycles, but not for heating homes

Coal is a conventional material for heating homes, but not for growing plants in

and so on.
