The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney.
cotton gin
Eli witney has invented the cotton engine or you can say cotton gin.
Originally the word engine simply meant machine, but this usage has declined somewhat as modern usage has tended to use it only to refer to motors.Another example of that usage is in cotton gin, where gin is a shortening of engine. Thus this is actually cotton engine or cotton machine. So a catapult is referred to as a siege engine or siege machine.

I think it is in Burton, Texas. It is a 16 ton, internal combustion engine cotton gin.
Burton Cotton Gin in Texas, I believe.
The cotton boom started in 1840 because the invention of the cotton gin (short for engine) made cotton production easier. By 1860, the US was producing more than half of the world's cotton.
Eli Whitney invented a machine called the cotton gin that separated the seeds from the raw cotton at a fast rate.
the cotton gin
During the Civil War, there WAS no machinery to pick cotton- it was picked by hand. The machine that was used to separate the cotton fiber from the seeds was the Cotton Gin (as in engine).
It is a machine (gin comes from engine) that quickly removes the seeds from raw cotton. It made cotton cheap to produce.
