A crab's habitat is in the ocean and sandy land and it may have some stones and rocks with a little bit of water depending on it breed. Don't use fresh water! Only use salt-water from the pet store, in emergancys, go to a pet store right away! Fiddler crab's die in 1 hour without salt-water.

Some crabs live in the ocean, and as adults live on the bottom of the ocean (larval forms are planktonic). Some oceanic species live in the littoral zone (shore crabs).

Other crabs have adapted to live holes that they dig on land (land crabs) and inhabit the forest floor or forage in trees (eg the coconut crab).

However all crabs must return to the ocean to lay their eggs and this can cause spectacular events such as the Christmas Island crab migrations.
