The movie starts out with an excited Alice Cullen preparing for Edward Cullen and Bella Swan's wedding. Later during the night before their wedding, Edward comes to visit Bella. He then admits to her that he has killed humans during a rebellious stage, instead of following his father/creator Carlisle Cullen's rules. Bella tells him that she still wants to marry him, despite Edward thinking she doesn't want to get married and has cold feet. She has a dream about walking down the aisles, with everyone she knows witnessing it.
The couple spends their honeymoon on the Cullens' private Brazilian island, Isle Esme. The island was a gift from Carlisle to Esme Cullen. Although hesitant, Edward has sex with Bella for the first time. After Edward realizes that he bruised Bella's arm, back and shoulders during it, he vows to never be intimate with her again, much to her disappointment. Edward tries to distract Bella, and she starts wearing lingerie to sleep. Bella discovers that she is pregnant with the half-human and half-vampire fetus growing at an extraordinarily accelerated rate. They rush back to Forks, while Edward is still frozen. All the family wants the baby to be extracted from Bella. She refuses to consider having an abortion, and enlists Rosalie's help to protect her wishes.
Opposed to Sam Uley's plans to kill Bella and her child, which is thought to be a demon, Jacob angrily leaves the pack and arrives at the Cullens' to protect Bella; Seth and Leah Clearwater join him, forming a new wolf pack. As the pregnancy progresses, Bella's health severely deteriorates. As a last resort, she begins drinking blood, which satisfies her baby and allows her to regain some strength. Edward has a talk with Jacob, saying he and Bella have a connection he will never understand. Edward wished Jacob could somehow talk Bella out of keeping the baby. Edward says if Bella dies, Jacob can kill him. When both enter again, Bella tells the boys her baby names. Convinced he is a boy, she wants to name the baby EJ, which is short for Edward Jacob. While playing around with their mother's names, she says that she wants to name the girl Renesmee. Edward learns he can read the baby's mind and tells Bella that the baby loves her.
Soon afterward, Bella goes into a painful labor and gives birth to a baby girl. Edward shows Bella the baby, but then he notices Bella isn't moving. He gives the baby to Rosalie while Jacob starts doing CPR. Edward frantically injects Bella's heart with his venom to transform her into a vampire, but nothing happens, and Bella is thought to be dead. Jacob tells Edward that he won't kill Edward and says he deserves to live with the guilt. Jacob runs outside and cries, but then he goes back in and attempts to kill the baby. He stops when he realizes he has imprinted on the Renesmee, becoming her protector.
When the werewolves learn of Bella's "death", they attack the Cullens' house in an attempt to kill the baby. They are forced to stop after learning Jacob has imprinted on Renesmee, which, under their wolf law, means Renesmee cannot be harmed. Bella's has her life flash before her after Edward starts to bite her arms and legs attempting to spread more venom. The venom reaches her heart and Edward stands there worrying he is too late. The Cullens all look at each other in shock. Bella's heart finally ceases, and she awakens with red eyes, a newborn vampire. T
