A solute is a substance that will dissolve in a solvent to form a solution. For example, in salt water, salt is the solute (as it is dissolved), water is the solvent (as it dissolves the salt), and salt water is the solution.

If you add more water to the salt water so you have a lot more water than salt in the solution, you are diluting it. So basically, dilute means that you add water to a solution to make the concentration of the solute lower.
