1) Redundancy: a failure in a single 256MB is critical where as a failure in either 128MB module leaves you at half capacity.

2) Speed : accessing two separate devices is usually quicker than accessing a single device.

However up sides to the single module is usually cost and free slots to expand further.

A disadvantage of using two 64 MB modules instead of a single 128 MB module in a system with 3 slots for memory modules is that these are old main boards only being able to access one slot at a time. Modern main boards have four slots.

Other then cost, if it supports it you will not be able to dual channel which would decrease speed. And if it somehow gets corrupted you won't have any RAM available to recover data or to do anything of that matter you would get a message insignificant memory. Thus, your computer would be unusable for the most part

Well the 2GB uses one slot and the single 1GB uses two slots if you have two of them...

That means if you have one 2GB module you can get another one and you will have 4GB of RAM.....

Cost, and plus if you lose your memory then there's no RAM to recover the data.

you can put 2 128mb in dual channal mode, this theoretically doubles data throughput from the memory to the memory controller.

Ultimately, larger sticks will allow more ram but 2x512 sticks may actually perform faster.

What is a disadvantage of using two 512 mb modules instead of a sing 1gb module in a system with three slots for memory modules?

As the memory speed is limited, you essentially double the available speed by having two modules, as they run in parallel. The efficiency is generally increased by 20-30% by having two 512mb modules rather than one 1GB module.
