Thrush
Another name for founder is Laminitis, separation of the hoof wall from the softer structures of the hoof. Laminitis, a painful and sometimes fatal disease of the hoof.
Thrush is the black, smelly infectious bacteria that horse's generally get around the frog of their hoof. It is not a disease, just a bacterial infection that can cause a horse to be lame if not treated properly.
Thrush and/or mud fever can be caused by a horse kept in wet footing.
