A displacement reaction is one where a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from its compound.

Example:

MgCl + Na ---> NaCl2 + Mg

Here, Na or Sodium is more reactive than Mg, so it displaces Mg from its compound.

There are two types of displacement reaction: double displacement and single displacement.

In a double displacement reaction two elements in compounds essentially "switch places." This is occurs in some acid-base reactions (NaOH + HCl → H2O +NaCl) and precipitation reactions (AgNO3(aq) +NaCl(aq) → AgCl(s) +NaNO3(aq) ).

In a single displacement reaction a simple element replaces another element in a compound.

(2Na + 2H2O → 2NaOH +H2)

(Mg + H2SO4 → MgSO4 +H2)

The reactivity of the halogens decreases as we move down the group. This can be shown by looking at displacement reactions.

When chlorine (as a gas or dissolved in water) is added to sodium bromide solution the chlorine takes the place of the bromine. Because chlorine is more reactive than bromine, it displaces bromine from sodium bromide. The solution turns brown. This brown colour is the displaced bromine. The chlorine has gone to form sodium chloride.

If you look at the equation, you can see that the Cl and Br have swapped places.

chlorine + sodium bromide → sodium chloride + bromine

Cl2(aq) + 2NaBr(aq) → 2NaCl(aq) + Br2(aq)
