A dyer is (or rather, WAS) someone who made their living from dying fabric. They were commissioned by merchants to dye cloth and other materials into different colours, or sometimes to bleach colour OUT of fabric and re-dye it a different colour. They also conditioned cloth and leather into being softer or harder than it actually was, as the need arose.
Up until the late 17th Century, the dyes used came mainly from natural sources, and believe it or not, urine was a necessary ingredient in the process! Getting a smooth, even finish was very difficult and required great skill, so the dyer's profession was quite highly regarded.
