Usually this is indicated by lines of equal elevation, which are called contour lines, and by shades of colors (green, yellow, brown, red) that indicate levels of height.
In the map key, it might have color blocks that say or indicate, for example
(Green) = 0 to 1500 feet
(Yellow) = 1500 to 7500 feet
(Brown) = 7500 to 10000 feet
where various intermixed colors would have intermediate values.
