the diversity of antigen receptors in both B cells and T cells is a result of shuffling and rearranging a few hundred versions of several smaller gene segments. This process is called genetic recombination.

Body defenses hair, eyelashes and eyebrows that protect the skin and eyes from foreign matter. The mucous in the nose also helps to protect you from dust and other particles. The respiratory cilia protect against respiratory pathogens and particles. The acid mantle and intact skin protect your body by preventing absorption of pathogens and toxins. The stomach acid protects the digestive system. There are also components in the blood, including white blood cells and antibodies, that protect your body from pathogens and abnormal cells.

An antibody is a type of protein. The body's immune system produces antibodies when it detects harmful substances, called antigens. Examples of antigens include microorganisms (such as as bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses) and chemicals.

Antibodies are also be produced when the immune system mistakenly considers healthy tissue a harmful substance. See: Autoimmune disorders

Each type of antibody is unique and defends the body against one specific type of antigen.
