In the U.S. you can spend time in jail after you are arrested, before your trial. It will be a short stay if you can pay your bail, a longer stay if you can't.

If you are arrested, you are entitled to a lawyer and should use one because it's the lawyers duty to see that these rights are enforced. It would be a very unusual circumstance where an arraignment, trial or a hearing wasn't scheduled. If that happens, at the earliest possible opportunity, you must get a lawyer to enforce your rights, or to sue the jurisdiction responsible for your situation.
