Notre Dame ("Our Lady") is a cathedral that sits on the Île de la Cité in Paris. Construction began on Notre Dame in 1163 at the direction of the Bishop of Paris, Maurice de Sully. Construction continued for the next 50 years. Some 20 years later, parts of the cathedral were remodeled. Remaining elements were finally completed by 1345. It is 420 feet long and 226 feet wide; its two towers are 226 feet tall while its spire is 300 feet tall. The cathedral has played a major role in many historical events, including coronations, royal marriages, and celebrations. It is possibly the most famous cathedral in history.
