Go there! Throw yourself in the deep end. If that is not possible then do a Conversational Japanese course. YOU will learn real Japanese, the everyday Japanese that you need to use in general living, shopping, meeting friends, using public transport etc..
Formal Japanese education is very textbook orientated so you end up speaking like a robot, not what real Japanese use.
