I think your referring to the Spanish Armada.
The Merrimack, also known as the Virginia, was the first ironclad warship. It was created by the Confederacy in 1862 in order to retaliate against the Union Fleet blockading southern ports.

The French fleet was consigned to its harbors, mostly in Toulon, Algeria and Senegal. The fleets in Algeria and Senegal were shortly afterwards destroyed by the Allies who feared that the ships might otherwise be made part of Germany's war fleet. The fleet harbored in Toulon was scuttled by the French themselves when the German army entered Toulon to take over from the French Vichy government.
