An object can only slow down, speed up, or change direction, if there is a net force acting on the object.
Speed is how fast something is moving. When to things are traveling at the same speed and rubbing together, they can cause friction.
No force is required to keep something moving. According to Newton's Second Law, you need a force to speed something up, or to slow something down - not to keep it moving.

Its all physics. Things speed up and slow down because of a force acting upon them. Newton's second law of motion states that the force applied to an object is equal to its mass times acceleration, i.e. F = MA. As a result force causes a change in acceleration, which causes a change in velocity. This can be positive or negative, depending on which direction the force is acting.
