Unless the tank asks for a specific amount the tank will normally accept any amount you deem fit to tip them. Great runs that end up having no wipes can earn a tank anywhere from 50-200g, where as a bad run or one that doesn't get finished can lead the tank to get stiffed.
Take advantage of the Looking for group feature. While you wait for your turn in the instance you can work on farming mats or just doing daily quests.
