In my opinion, the best of the novels and short stories are

Barbie's New York Summer, by Cynthia Lawrence, 1962

Barbie and Skipper Go Camping, by Eileen Daly, 1973

Mystery of Mermaid Bay, by John Braden, 1987

Wild Horse Run, by Suzanne Weyn, 1993

Three Cheers for Becky, by Lynn Offerman, 1998

These are my personal favorites of the reference books.

1977: The Collector's Encyclopedia of Barbie Dolls and Collectibles, by Sibyl DeWein and Joan Ashabraner.

1980: Collectible Barbie Dolls 1977-1979, by Sibyl St. John DeWein.

1983: The World of Barbie Dolls, by Paris and Susan Manos, Collector Books.

1987: The Wonder of Barbie Dolls and Accessories 1976 to 1986, by Paris and Susan Manos, Collector Books.

1990: Barbie Doll Fashion Vol. 1 1959 to 1967, by Sarah Sink Eames, Collector Books.

1996: The Barbie Doll Boom 1986-1995, by J. Michael Augustyniak.

1996: The Ultimate Barbie Doll Book, US Issues 1959-1995, by Marcie Melillo, Krause Publications.

1997: Barbie Doll Fashions Vol. II 1968 to 1974, by Sarah Sink Eames, Collector Books.

1997: A Decade of Barbie Dolls and Collectibles 1981-1991, by Beth Summers, Collector Books.

1998: Skipper Identification and Value Guide Also Featuring Tutti and Todd, by Scott Arend, Karla Holzerland and Trina Kent, Collector Books. Updated in 2010.

1998: Thirty Years of Mattel Fashion Dolls, 1967 through 1997, by J. Michael Augustyniak, Collector Books.

2004: Barbie Doll Fashion Vol. III, 1975 to 1979, by Sarah Sink Eames, Collector Books.
