Its hard to answear for 12, some 12 year olds like much more mature books than othres. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are a good genereal mix, Twilight seems to be popular among that age group aswel.
However, I think the best bet is to go to a libary, and look at the books, find one which appeals and borrow it, and see if you enjoy it. Then you can look for books similar to that one, or try another book.
