I asked myself this before but now I write stories and ideas like there's no tomorrow. In my opinion I like to start with my characters name or maybe a quote. An example with my Prince Oscar story is... " Prince Oscar have fun on your journey!" everyone yelled joyfully at me as the large cruise pulled away from the harbor of Germany. Leave the reader wanting to read more.

There are five main elements to a story

  1. setting
  2. character
  3. plot
  4. narrative
  5. theme.

You can use any one of these as a starting point for a story.

  1. The night was dark and stormy and the rain came down in torrents
  2. Tommy Thompkins was an Indian slave in the days when slaves were still had.
  3. An orange ball of fire erupted from the fifth story windows and jerked the city alive.
  4. Come and listen to my story about a man named Jed.
  5. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

Well, you could always start off by asking a question that has to do with your topic...

Example: my topic is about suicide, start off by asking a question such as.....Have you ever thought about commiting suicide? that lets the readers really start to get into the story

The best sentence to start off your story is one you think of - and here's a hint: you won't know what that sentence is until you've finished the story! Once you have the whole thing done, you'll be able to go back and write the perfect first sentence that leads into that story.

It depends on what your story is about! You'll have to decide what your story is going to be about before you can write that first sentence.

My advice is to forget about finding some sort of perfect first sentence and just write the story and get it down -- then when you've finished, go back and write a perfect first sentence!

You start all stories in the same way -- in the middle of the action. A suspenseful story would want to start in a really exciting action. Click the related link to learn more about starting stories.
