Betta fish don't even think about goldfish they need 10 gallons each. If your bowl is bigger than 1 gallon a betta will do fine. Below 1 gallon get a ghost shrimp or snail

That depends upon the size of the fish bowl. Fish bowls are an invention of the past and were popular during the 18 century, but now, with reasonably good education, we know and understand the needs of a fish, and therefore realise that goldfish bowls are not suitable for keeping fish in.
it is always good to get some kind of filter for your fish, but natural ponds dont' always need one. the filters will keep out some bad bacteria though, and keep your fish healthy longer, and allow you to actually see them. goldfish are very hardy and can withstand quite a bit.
