If it is a good gun, why wouldn't you buy it if it meets your needs (budget, end use, etc.)? As a general rule, you get what you pay for. However, there are some 100 dollar guns that will do serviceable duty as well as a 1000 dollar gun.

Sporting good stores or on the web.
You can purchase them online but you have chance of not getting what you wanted. I prefer to find what paint balls I like from a store and then I go home and search for what i liked and then i will buy it online.

A 12 year old can't "own" a gun, since you have to be 18 to buy a rifle and 21 to buy a handgun.
Airsoftmegastore.com anything over 100 dollors is good usually
The best thing you can do is to buy a Manuel. Chiltons has a very good one and practice, practice, practice. AND DON'T BUY A CHEAP PAINT GUN. A good gun will run around $100.00 trust me I have had schooling in this area
I look at a few things, but mostly I check out reviews of the gun. There's many good airsoft gun review sites. Then, I look at who makes the gun. Some companies are known for making good guns, and others for making crap guns. I would try to find a good review of the gun that shows what's in the gearbox. I wouldn't buy an AEG unless it is over $100. Don't buy Crosman or Boyi.
It's not a matter of where you buy it really. Its a matter of what you buy. But as long as they'll send it to you in one piece you should be good
