If you do what we did, leave Adelaide early, we always stop in Horsham, stretch our legs, grab a late brekky at maccas then make the treck into melbourne.
The half way point between Melbourne to Adelaide is the town of Nhill, in the state of Victoria. It's approx a 4 hour drive then a 1 hour drive to the border of South Australia. It's then a 3 hour drive to Adelaide.
melburne is better for shopping because it is a bigger city than Adelaide and Adelaide is more rural
Good traffic, about 7 hours.
EVERYTHING!

The best time, with the best weather conditions for travelling between Adelaide and Darwin is August-September.
Yes it's a beautiful name! I love it!
maybe?
Good-Will.
A good way to find a halfway house is to talk to the local AA chairperson.
The shortest route from Cairns to Melbourne is the inland route, through Hughenden, Barcaldine, Cobar, Debiliquin and Echuca. This route covers 2816km and takes a good four days to travel (about 34 hours). The above route travels through some very isolated country. An alternative is to travel south to Rockhampton, then inland to Banana, Miles, Goondiwindi, Moree, Dubbo, West Wyalong, Howlong and Chiltern. This route is longer but there is more for the traveller to see and do along the way. The trip is 3079km in length, and takes about 37 hours.
